Houston Chronicle Obituary: Gary Levering

Gary's Impact

In 1979, a grassroots effort of dedicated individuals with depression and bipolar disorder, collectively known as “mood disorders”, formed re:MIND (formerly known as DBSA Greater Houston) to provide free support groups for themselves and others who lived with these difficult mental illnesses. During the first 20 years, a few of these volunteers, including Gary, took leadership positions within the organization. In addition to facilitating support groups once a week, they formed a small board and received non-profit status. In 1989, the Houston chapter joined the national DBSA organization.

In 2003, Gary saw the potential for growth. His vision was to strengthen the organization and provide additional groups in the community. He did this by identifying and recruiting a strong, dedicated, active board of directors, generating significant funding, and hiring a professional staff to support the program.

Gary consistently encouraged us to Think Big! Thanks to Gary’s vision, re:MIND provides 70 support groups in 50 locations.

Gary's Legacy

Gary's vision for re:MIND guides us as we carry out our mission to provide free and confidential support groups to individuals living with, or family and friends affected, by depression and bipolar disorders. Learn more about the Gary L. Levering Endowment.
